From Consultation to Completion: The Cost of Full Dentures

A comprehensive guide to dentures, including the variety of different dentures on offer and the cost of denture treatments at a private dental practice.

The Different Types of Dentures

This part of the blog outlines the different types of dentures on offer, considering the key characteristics of each option.

Full Dentures

Complete dentures are the most common type for people who don’t have all their natural teeth. They rest on top of the gum and are secured with suction, making them completely removable.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are commonly used as an alternative to full dentures when the patient has some remaining natural teeth. They are held by clasps on the remaining teeth but are removable.

Dentures that use implants

All-on-4

An all-on-4 is a fixed bridge (hybrid denture) in which a prosthetic of 14 teeth is attached to 4 or 6 dental implants on each arch. They are very stable and secure and offer several more benefits than traditional dentures. Although they are the most expensive option for dentures, they offer the least movement and longest-lasting option. Plus, you can wear them all the time.

Implant-retained dentures

Implant-retained dentures are a modern approach to fixing common problems with traditional dentures. For example, dentures can become loose, allowing food to get trapped underneath and causing gum irritation. On the other hand, implant-retained dentures are incredibly secure, as they are typically held in place by 3 dental implants per arch. Therefore, they provide both security and predictability, but compared to All-on-4, they’re more affordable because they’re removable (click in and out).

Advantages of implant-retained dentures include:

  • Improved chewing capability
  • Promotes jawbone growth
  • Very natural looking

Although it is one of the more expensive options, implant-retained dentures provide the most secure and aesthetic dentures.

Choosing traditional dentures – Metal vs. Acrylic Dentures

There are different types of dentures and multiple options for their materials. Below are key points about the difference between Acrylic and Metal Dentures.

Acrylic (Plastic) Dentures

Advantages

  • Budget Friendly: Less costly compared to metal dentures.
  • Adjustable: The material’s flexibility makes it easy to adjust and realign.
  • Faster to create: Arrive faster.

Disadvantages

  • Thicker Design: Must be bulkier to support the dentures.
  • Not as comfortable: Due to the thickness of the base, it takes longer to get used to them, and they may be less comfortable than metal dentures.

Metal (Cobalt Chrome) Dentures

Advantages

  • Custom-designed framework: It is fitted to the contours of your mouth, making it extremely comfortable.
  • Durability: Extremely durable and, as a result, have an increased lifespan.
  • Very comfortable: The thinner design makes them increasingly more comfortable than acrylic dentures.

Disadvantages

  • More expensive: A more expensive option than acrylic dentures due to the material and expertise required.
  • Longer procedure: Far more intricate to make and therefore require longer to produce.
