When we'll recommend a filling
Fillings are one of the most common dental treatments—and for good reason. They’re effective in repairing teeth damaged by decay, wear, or trauma.
When Might You Need a Filling?
- After removing tooth decay
- To restore a chipped or broken tooth
- To rebuild a worn-down tooth
Types of Fillings
We provide both direct and indirect fillings:
- Direct fillings: Completed in a single visit (e.g., amalgam, composite, or glass ionomer)
- Indirect fillings: Created in a dental lab (e.g., ceramic, gold, or metal), ideal for larger cavities
The best option for you will depend on the cavity’s size, shape, and location.
Filling Materials We Use
Composite (White) Fillings
Our go-to for most small to medium cavities:
- Tooth-coloured for a natural look
- Minimally invasive – preserves more of your healthy tooth
- Placed with precision using a rubber dam for moisture control
Amalgam (Silver) Fillings
- Long-lasting and strong
- Commonly used in NHS dentistry
- Less aesthetic and more invasive due to the need for mechanical retention
Glass Ionomer
- White-coloured, semi-permanent
- Often used for children or as a temporary filling
- Lasts up to 5 years
Ceramic / Porcelain Fillings
- Extremely durable and natural-looking
- Ideal for larger cavities where strength and aesthetics are essential
Gold Fillings
- Incredibly strong and long-lasting
- Premium material, but also more expensive
Whether you’re dealing with decay or cosmetic concerns, our team will choose the best material for your specific needs.
“This was by far the most personally attentive dental practice I have ever visited. Thank you for putting me completely at ease. The treatment I received was explained clearly and the after care was exceptional. I have now transferred my whole family to this practice. I highly recommend Dr Sona and her team.” Adel, Wycombe
