Teeth whitening guide

  • OTC strips and toothpastes are not effective.
  • Charcoal products or toothpastes aren’t helpful or healthy.
  • At-home whitening systems usually contain 3% to 20% peroxide.
  • In-chair whitening methods contain 15% to 43% peroxide.
  • Tooth whitening products offered by dentists provide more impactful results in half the time.
  • Dental whitening solutions from dentists are safer and do not increase tooth sensitivity.
  • Dental veneers or dental crowns cannot be whitened.

“Teeth whitening doesn’t work.” You might have heard this phrase from friends and family, who have spent hundreds of pounds on countless at-home tooth whitening methods.

Products like teeth-whitening strips and kits can be dangerous and harmful to teeth and often do not yield desired results. This is because patients who wish to lighten their teeth often suffer from severe staining, very discoloured or very yellow teeth.

These products are simply not strong enough and only temporarily lighten teeth. Therefore, you will have to frequently use these strips to achieve a cleaner-looking smile.

What you might not know is that sometimes, teeth are just dark. Because of genetics, you might be born with darker teeth or experience enamel thinning, where the teeth begin to wear and thin.

Even professional teeth whitening has its limits – it does not last forever. Teeth whitening can last anywhere from a few months to three years, and this can vary from person to person. For example, smokers and heavy drinkers of red wine and tea will be exposed to more staining.

Veneers can be a great choice for patients who want something more permanent. Not only are they stain-resistant, but they can last a lifetime and offer patients the chance to fix many smile imperfections at once.  In cases of severe discolouration, veneers may be the only possible procedure to whiten your smile.

Whitening can still be performed, and we will ensure you have the suitable gel. We can also provide tips and tricks to help against any sensitivity you might incur.
