Frequently asked questions by previous patients of our Invisalign service

How Does Invisalign Work?

A series of custom-made aligners will be created to fit comfortably and securely onto your teeth. The aligners will be swapped for a new one in the sequence every seven to fourteen days.

The aligners are made from a SmartTrack material that is exclusive to Invisalign.  This near-invisible material gently and predictably moves your teeth.

How often do I need to wear my aligners?

We recommend wearing your aligners for at least 22 hours a day.  You can take them out for eating and brushing and flossing your teeth.

People who don’t wear their aligners for the recommended time are often disappointed in their expectations of the results.

Is Invisalign suitable for me?

For many people, the answer is yes. Whether you want to make small adjustments to give you more confidence or feel you need a smile makeover, Invisalign treatment could be for you.

Invisalign effectively treats

  • Crooked, overlapping or crowded teeth
  • Gappy teeth and spacing
  • Deep bites, overjets and underjets
  • Open bites and crossbites

Can Invisalign be used to treat complicated cases?

Invisalign can be used for a variety of different orthodontic needs.  However, sometimes conventional fixed orthodontics will be better.  Your dentist and/or orthodontist will discuss your individual requirements.

How long does Invisalign take?

While each case is different, treatment can take 6-12 months to complete.  Some cases can take up to 2 years.

Is Invisalign painful?

Invisalign is more comfortable than fixed braces. However, teeth can be slightly uncomfortable during the first few days of treatment or when you change an aligner.  This subsides very quickly.

What are the advantages of Invisalign compared to traditional fixed braces?

  • Invisalign clear retainers are more discreet. They are (almost) invisible.
  • Easier to maintain better oral hygiene; you can take them out to brush your teeth.
  • You can take them out to eat.
  • More comfortable on the cheeks, the aligners don’t rub like traditional braces do.
  • Less painful than traditional braces.

Will I lisp with my retainers?

Initially, you may find it tricky to say certain words, but after 1-2 weeks, you will get used to the aligners in your mouth and be able to talk normally.  Many patients give presentations or teach to classrooms full of students with no difficulty.

Is it really invisible?

Nothing in this life is truly invisible. However, it is the closest thing we have in dentistry to being invisible.
