Correcting a Narrow smile

A narrow arch shows six teeth or less when smiling. This is a common problem amongst our patients who are embarrassed about their smiles.

What causes a narrow smile?

A narrow smile can be caused by:

  • Childhood habits such as sucking a thumb and never having braces to rectify it
  • The developmental growth of the jaw and alignment of the teeth
  • Missing teeth

It can also produce an ageing effect as the cheeks are not fully supported.

On the other hand, a more comprehensive smile is seen as more vibrant and youthful as it supports the face and is symmetrical.

How can I widen my smile?

There are three options to widen the smile. You can have:

  • Braces include Invisalign and fixed braces. These will move the teeth into a more optimal position and expand the jaw
  • Veneers: placing a thin shell of composite or porcelain onto the surface of the teeth to give the appearance of fullness
  • Braces and veneers. Often we have to use both options to enhance the smile fully

Invisalign is the invisible way to straighten your teeth. Invisalign is a custom-made, clear plastic aligner that gently and gradually moves your teeth into the optimal position.

Depending on the severity of the case, it can take anywhere from 4-12 months to treat, with the average case taking 6-8 months to finish.

Traditional fixed braces

Fixed braces involve a metal or ceramic bracket temporarily glued to your tooth’s front surface. The frames are joined together by a flexible wire adjusted to straighten your teeth over time.

Fixed braces are the gold standard in orthodontics.

They are the most reliable, predictable and accurate method of straightening teeth and can solve simple up to complicated movements.

Straightening your teeth can take 12-24 months, with the average treatment taking 18 months.

What are the advantages of Invisalign compared to traditional fixed braces?

  • Invisalign clear retainers are more discreet. They are (almost) invisible
  • Easier to maintain better oral hygiene; you can take them out to brush your teeth
  • You can take them out to eat
  • More comfortable on the cheeks, the aligners don’t rub like traditional braces do
  • Less painful than traditional braces

What are the advantages of having veneers?

  • Veneers can instantly enhance and change your smile.
  • You can create your unique aesthetics; we can personalise them to suit your face and personality.
  • They can last for up to 20 years if properly maintained
  • They are very natural
  • They can be used as cosmetic procedures or to fix functional dental problems.

What is the difference between a Composite Veneer and a Porcelain Veneer?

  • Porcelain veneers are made from a more robust, durable material than composite veneers.
  • Composite veneers are cheaper than a porcelain veneer
  • Porcelain veneers last longer than composite veneers. A well-cared-for Porcelain veneer can last up to 20 years.
  • Porcelain veneers do not stain as quickly as composite veneers
