Correcting Crooked teeth

Do you hide your smile? Do you hate seeing photographs of you smiling? Do you find it difficult to floss and clean your teeth?

Crooked or misaligned teeth are a common problem in the UK. They look unappealing and can lead to other dental health problems.

Unfortunately, as we age, our teeth move, and our jaws narrow; this is particularly noticeable in the lower jaw.

This results in our teeth becoming increasingly crooked. Many people begin to notice this in their 30s despite having orthodontics as a teenager.

Misaligned teeth can:

  • be challenging to clean and floss your teeth adequately, leading to gum problems and dental decay
  • can wear down and get shorter or traumatise the opposite tooth
  • Can interfere with your bite

How can this be fixed?

Moving your teeth into the correct position could save you from having more advanced dentistry in the future.

It would also enable you to clean your teeth and gums more effectively and have a healthier mouth. This can reduce your risk of dental decay and gum disease.

How can I fix my crooked teeth?

There are two options to fix crooked teeth.

You can:

  • Straighten your teeth
  • Veneer or crown your teeth

Straightening- This type of dentistry is known as orthodontics

Straightening can be completed using braces. We have two kinds of brace systems:

  • Invisalign (or other transparent aligner systems)
  • Traditional fixed braces (wires).

Invisalign is the invisible way to straighten your teeth. It has transformed over 11 million smiles worldwide and is the most advanced precise aligner therapy on the market.

Invisalign is a custom-made, clear aligner that gently and gradually moves your teeth to the optimal position.

Depending on the severity of the case, it can take anywhere from 4-24 months to treat, with the average case taking 6-8 months to finish.

Traditional fixed braces

Fixed braces involve a metal or ceramic bracket temporarily glued to your tooth’s front surface.

The frames are joined together by a flexible wire adjusted to straighten your teeth over time.

Fixed braces are the gold standard in orthodontics. They are the most reliable, predictable and accurate method of straightening teeth and can solve simple up to complicated movements.

Straightening your teeth can take 12-24 months, with the average treatment taking 18 months.

Veneers and crowns

These are thin shells of either porcelain or composite material that fit over your teeth and can instantly change the appearance of your teeth.

Veneers also have the added benefit of changing your teeth’ size, shape and colour. They commonly require some tooth adjustment to make space for restoration.
