Reasons for Yellow Teeth

As a dentist, a question I get asked by my patients is, why are my teeth yellow, and what can I do about this? While some people are merely curious, having discoloured teeth embarrasses many of my patients to the point that quite a few are ashamed.

I never want any of my patients to feel ashamed or embarrassed. My goal is always to restore a patient’s health and happiness.

Why are my teeth yellow?

There are many reasons why teeth may appear yellow, and I will go through the four most common reasons that I see daily.

1. Food, drink and smoking

These are our lifestyle factors. Thankfully, they are reversible. They can stain our teeth brown or grey, and we mainly see this staining on our lower teeth. It can be on the back of the teeth or the difficult-to-reach side parts of our teeth. Even healthy foods and drinks, like green tea or any sauce with turmeric or tomatoes, can stain our teeth.

2. Age

Unfortunately, this is one process that we are powerless to stop. As we age, the enamel on our teeth wears down, and the warm, yellow-coloured dentine shines through.

3. Grinding

You may not even know that you are grinding or clenching, but it can cause your teeth to discolour. Extreme pressure on your teeth at night, which you cannot control, causes the teeth to create more of the yellow dentine, thus making them look yellow. It also chips and fractures the enamel, causing your teeth to look much older than they are. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a problem that I am seeing more and more.

4. Crooked Teeth

Straight teeth are easier to clean. If you have any teeth that appear pushed or sitting further back, it can be difficult for your toothbrush to reach them; also, in photos, they are in shadow, making them look darker.

What can you do?

If having yellow teeth bothers you, you will be happy to know we have many options; we must find the right one.

1. Hygienist Visit

A 30-minute hygiene visit may be all it takes to get your smile shining brighter. It works by removing the staining caused by food, drink and staining. At this appointment, we can also give you tailored advice that you can use at home to make your bright smile last longer.

2. Teeth Whitening

This is one of the most popular treatments at Chapel Dental because it is simple and effective. You are in total control. Every night, you place a whitening gel into a bespoke tray made precisely to the dimensions of your mouth. Within 3 weeks, you will have a beautiful, natural and whiter smile. This treatment works well for yellow teeth caused by grinding and ageing. The only disadvantage is that it won’t fix any chipped or broken teeth caused by grinding. Learn more.

Whitening your smile can cost as little as £80.

3. Veneers or Bonding

This treatment works beautifully with teeth whitening. Once whitened, we can fix the teeth’ shape by adding composite onto the chipped and uneven edges.

If you’d like to take it one step further, with composite or porcelain veneers, we can completely change the shape and colour of your teeth and create a smile that will make you feel proud and confident. It can even make you look 10 years younger! Explore more.

4. Teeth straightening

We can fix those crooked teeth once and for all by placing them into the optimal position. It will give you a beautiful, straight smile and make those tricky teeth easier to clean. A straight smile is a healthy smile. Many people combine this with tooth whitening to create that straight white smile.

At Chapel Dental, we have treated many patients using a combination of treatment choices, and no one has ever regretted their decision. Explore all cosmetic options.
